Signs and Stages of Gum Disease - Austin, TX

Diagram comparing a healthy tooth with one affected by periodontitis illustrated by Periodontal Surgical Arts in Austin, TXGum disease is far more common than most people realize.

According to the CDC, roughly 47% of U.S. adults age 30 and older have periodontitis, the advanced form of gum disease.

Because it is often painless in its early stages, many people don't know they have it until real damage is done.

At Periodontal Surgical Arts on Bee Caves Road, Drs. David Yu, Nicole Litizzette and Joelle McRee are specialists in periodontics and implantology.

Knowing the signs and stages of gum disease helps you get treated early, when care is simpler and your natural teeth are easier to save.

Warning Signs of Gum Disease You Shouldn't Ignore

Healthy gums are firm, pink and don't bleed. If you notice any of the following, it's time for a periodontal evaluation.

Bleeding, Red or Swollen Gums

Gums that bleed when you brush or floss are not normal. Redness, puffiness and tenderness are often the first signs that plaque bacteria are irritating your gum tissue.

Persistent Bad Breath

Bad breath that won't go away with brushing or mouthwash can signal a bacterial infection below the gumline.

Receding Gums and Sensitive Teeth

If your teeth look longer or feel sensitive to hot and cold, your gums may be pulling away and exposing the roots.

Loose Teeth, Painful Chewing or a Changing Bite

Teeth that shift, feel loose or hurt when you chew suggest the bone supporting them is being lost. This is a sign of more advanced disease that needs prompt care.

The 4 Stages of Gum Disease

Gum disease is progressive. The earlier it's caught, the more treatment options you have.

Stage 1: Gingivitis

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums caused by plaque buildup. You may see bleeding or puffiness, but no bone has been lost yet. The good news: gingivitis is reversible with a professional cleaning and better home care.

Stage 2: Early (Mild) Periodontitis

Without treatment, infection spreads below the gumline. Gums begin pulling away from the teeth, forming small pockets where bacteria collect. Early bone loss starts here, and the damage can no longer be fully reversed by brushing alone.

Stage 3: Moderate Periodontitis

Pockets deepen and more bone and connective tissue are lost. You may notice receding gums, sensitivity and persistent bad breath. The CDC found that 30% of U.S. adults over 30 have moderate periodontitis, making it the most common stage.

Stage 4: Advanced Periodontitis

In the final stage, the bone supporting your teeth is severely damaged. Teeth may loosen, shift or need to be removed. Periodontal disease is a leading cause of tooth loss in older adults, but even advanced cases can often be managed with specialized periodontal care.

Are You at Higher Risk for Gum Disease?

Anyone can develop gum disease, but some factors raise your risk:

•  Smoking or tobacco use
•  Diabetes
•  Age, especially over 65
•  Family history of gum disease
•  Hormonal changes, including pregnancy
•  Certain medications that cause dry mouth

If any of these apply to you, regular periodontal screenings are especially important.

As periodontists, our doctors have advanced training in treating the gums and bone that support your teeth. We are conservative in our recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is truly needed.

Depending on your stage of gum disease, your treatment plan may include:

•  Laser periodontal therapy: We are the first and only periodontal office in Central Texas certified to use the WaterLase iPlus laser, which removes tartar and supports tissue regeneration with a more comfortable experience and quicker healing.

•  Bone and tissue regeneration: Advanced techniques help rebuild gum and bone lost to periodontitis.

•  Gum grafting: Restores receding gums, reduces sensitivity and protects exposed roots.

•  Dental implants: If a tooth can't be saved, our specialists can replace it with a natural-looking implant.
