We at Periodontal Surgical Arts, believe in the overall welfare of our patients but also advocate doing our part to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Following the mandate from Governor Abbott and the Texas Board of Dental Examiners, we are following distancing guidelines. This includes minimizing the number of patients and team members in the practice at one time. Also, patients are being treated one at a time on a personalized basis. No longer are we passively waiting for the body to do what we hope it would do, like regenerate bone and tissue. We are now able to engineer chemical signals to drive the body's cells to mediate the growth of new hard and soft tissues. This next generation of grafting is via the use of growth factors and biologic mediators. Experienced surgeons, like Drs. Yu and Litizzette, clearly understand the power of this technology for specific situations.


A technology, Leukocyte-Platelet Rich Fibrin (L-PRF), concentrates growth factors taken directly from the patient. The advantage of this technology is the increased amounts of the numerous growth factors which can speed healing and increase regeneration of tissues.

Platelet-Derived Grow Factor (PDGF) is a recombinant synthetic growth factor that induces bone growth and tissue healing. High amounts of PDGF kick off a cascade of healing events, leading to increased regeneration at the surgical site.

Enamel Matrix Protein Derivative (EMD) is a purified protein that signals the cells around teeth to create a new coating on the root, called acellular cementum- which in turn aids in regeneration of bone and attachment. This can be used with soft tissue grafting for increased healing and attachment.

Recombinant Human Bone Morphogenetic Protein (rhBMP-2) is a freeze-dried powder combined with a collagen sponge that induces dormant cells to be drawn in to create new bone de novo. It is a powerful inducer of bone formation. In fact because of its power, it is considered an alternative to a bone marrow graft from the hip.
